Reliable dog information
7 year old male neutered Papillon dog marking indoors. How can I get him to stop?
I have a papillon dog that I received from a friend who could no longer take care of him when he was about two years old. He has always had a terrible marking habit. I got him neutered and it did stop the behavior for awhile but now he has gone back to his old ways. I have tried many things and have been consistent with his training, but I just can't seem to get him to stop. I have another female papillon and I never had potty issues with her and she is spayed she is the dominate dog . I used a belly band before his surgery but now I don't since my dogs use a dog door to do their business outside when I have long work shifts only 3 days a week, otherwise I am home . You turn your back on him for a second and he will mark. My Kitchen and living area is starting to get an off smell and I don't always see his markings. He acts like I am the alpha in the household. What should I do? I have tried crating, treats and praise for going outside, put nose in marked area and scold, time out best discipline for my girl dog , belly bands he just soils them and stinks something fierce , morning and evening walks. Any advice???He uses the dog door to go outside during the time I am gone. When I did not work at all home almost everyday his behavior was still the same, I only used the belly bands when I was home. He doesn't wear them at all now since he uses the dog door. He doesn't have a urinary tract problem. I already had him checked for that a few times. To my dogs I am seen as the most dominant in the house, and the female has dominance over him as well. i really wanna get 2 baby bunnies but my mom keeps telling me its not a good idea because my dog will give them a heart attack. he likes to run around the cats and bark right in there face when he wants to play. i did read up on them a little and i know they can be fragile in some ways like how you have to take precautions if you have to pick them up because if you dont they could break their back. im thinking they should be ok if there raised with my doggy and kitty. my kitty was raised with my dog so she is also kinda rough cuz she kinda scratches and bites my dog on the neck but not that hard. my dog is only 14lbs and is a chihuahua dashound mix. do you think they could be happy living with each other?of corse i would read as much as possible. probably even get a book on them if i was almost sure i wanted one. but i think im gonna wait till my dog is an adult at 3, hes only 1.5 yrs old right now so im just gonna wait and hope he calms down, im pretty sure he will.buy then i will im sure ill be ready for a new kitten as well. idk
Could my dog have lime disease ?
My vet says that its a possiabilty that my dog has lime disease but we took the test about 3 weeks ago and it came up negative. She s a inside dog and we have only ever found maybe 2 3 ticks on here in her whole life shes 8. I think the last tick we pulled off of her was about a year ago but the test 3weeks ago say neg so why does my vet still think that this is what could be wrong with her ? Could she still have it ?
Am I shortening my dog's lifespan by feeding people food?
I have a 8 year old chihuahua. My goal is to get her to live to be at least 23 y o. I feed her Canadea ALL Life Stage Forumula. However, she also loves people food and everytime I eat, she wants a piece. I don't mind the begging but I do worry that I am shortening her lifespan.I feed the dog everything from bits of bacon and fried pork, to grilled salmon and chicken and steak. Not a full course, obviously, but just a few cuts. I remember reading that Mariah Carey credits her dog, Jack's, longevity to the fact that she refuses to feed him people food. Ever.However, I also realize that human grade food is overall better quality than animal grade food. so what do you think?any of you have dogs that live well over his or her life expectancy that you also happened to feel table scraps with.and I know how YA is. there's always going to be someone that is want to going to be rude because they think the question is dumb. so please, if you're just going to be rude, do you mind skipping this? and if you think i'm bossy or rude for saying this i.e Lavita the stalker then please complain to YA about it rather than ranting on this thread. thanksTo Add my dog is currently in great health and a good weight. Our family has been considering getting a dog for a few months and we have decided on a large or extra large breed.We are able to take care of a dog this size and have the proper environment to give as much exercise as needed, except to the point of a super active dog like a Border Collie, we're in the suburban area and don't have acreage for that.I personally have experience owning a Siberian Husky who was a real alpha female. She lived with me, and eventually my wife for a good long 13 years, so demanding and dominant dog breeds are okay.Hopefully someone can help us narrow down the list of some 700 breeds even further to the breed that is right for us.We do have a few we are considering already though, so I will post them here, and if a few seem 'off', then feel free to say so Borzoi,Saluki,English Springer Spaniel,Collie,German Shepard,And the good old Golden Retriever.If you can suggest a breed that may be better, or agree on one that's listed, please do so, I'm thankful of any input towards this decision.Thank you all for your input, it helps more than you thinkEspecially you Chloe, such a detailed answer with great suggestions, ideas, and links.. and we will definitely look into 'Newfies', from what I'm now reading they're a very lovely breed.
Dog section i need your help?
for English i need to write a mixed feelings essay story and i was going to do it on dogs and how i used to be scared of them when i was little but liked them at the same time and how my friends dog bit me then sat on me at a sleepover and all the barking running and jumping of my aunts dogs and also how the only dog i liked was her oldest dog and wished all dogs were like thatbut i need more ideas and or suggestions and a basis for my story i need to get a good grade.oh and by the way i love dogs now and own a 2yr old corgi and i am gonna add in towards the end that i am starting to like them.
Dog has dry cracked nose why?
my dog has always got a warm,dry,cracked nose.does anyone know why?.my other dogs nose is cold & wet.should i be concerned?
